When you think of the economy in Sardinia, it is still thought as an island of shepards. In some cases it is still true, but it´s economy has flourished throughout the years. It has evolved in a number of sectors from fishing to agriculture to mining and chemical industries. Lately a great source of income for this island has come from tourism.
Agriculture and breeding is still one of the key economic activities on the island of Sardinia. Mostly happening in mountainous areas. Up until the mid 70´s this type of work was what brought the majority of income to the sardinians. They bred sardinian sheep, known to be the best in the world, mountain goats and the famous Montiferri Red Ox. Milk and meat processing made the dairy industry flourish creating many factories which therefore created more jobs for the producing of the delicious pecorino cheeses and sausages. Cereal, olive oil and wine are also a great source of income thanks to their high quality.
Fishing along the coasts is also an important activity on the island. The Portoscuso tunas are exported worldwide, but primarily in Japan.
Mining dropped down to almost nothing with the passing of the years. The zinc mines used to be a great source of income. Granite was also exported all over the world.
Most recently technology has become of great importance on the island. The highest percentage of internet users in Italy is in Sardinia. Many IT companies have made their debuts on the island. Most importantly the internet host Tiscali which began in Cagliari.
